Subject: Adulting in the Athlete Lifestyle!

Hi Friend,

Happy Halloween to you! My little family is dressing up in a Harry Potter theme. Vivi is Hermionie Granger, Vanessa is supposed to be Ron Weasley's mom and I'm the older brother Percy. Vivi is trying an English accent all day and I'm not allowed to because Percy talks normal. So...it should be a fun day over here.

Adulting in the Athlete Lifestyle.

What does this even mean? I'm not really sure, but I thought it would catch your attention. When we lived in Savin Hill, a new coffee shop opened and they had a chalkboard sign outside that read, "Because adulting is hard!".

I'm using it because you may or may not relate to an athlete lifestyle or desire to live an athlete lifestyle however, living an athlete will give you most everything you're looking for as it pertains to health, body transformation and performance.

The adulting piece is to differentiate you from those who "may" have fewer responsibilities and can really focus on themselves, where as the adults I'm writing about in this moment have really full lives, with lots of blessings of responsibilities, roles and interdependence and need to get the most bang from their time. They may not be able to do a maximalist approach to their self-care, but they can make time and so they want to make it as efficient AND effective as possible. Adulting in the Athlete Lifestyle can do this for them.

What does this look like?

Adulting: you can make time, say 60min for example, daily, weekly & monthly in a recurring manner. you can make more time, say 2hrs to a weekend for example if you were training for an event with travel, especially when planned quarterly and bi-annually in both a recurring and non-recurring manner.

Athlete Lifestyle means what you do for self-care as a foundation, automatically addresses health. Health as in heart, bone / muscle / joints, mental, social, relational, doctors visits, disease fighting, the important stuff that we all care about but isn't really that fun to be our main focal point.

Body Transformation is what most everyone cares about. We want to look good. "When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good you play good", is what my dad told me when I was making sure my sanitary socks were pulled high and my baseball pants had the perfect crease just below my knees. He was right.

As adults, we want to go clothes shopping and feel good about what we wear. We want to be able to grab anything in our closet and feel confident. We want to look great naked and at the beach. Some of you just cringed, but nobody wants to look bad or not look at their selves in the mirror because of shame. So the Athlete Lifestyle addresses this too because the last time you checked, athletes are pretty fit.

Performance. Even if body transformation is your main focus, performance is what makes your life the most fun. You can look good, but it doesn't mean you can dance or play sports or chase kids or climb stairs. Performance means you can perform, ... on demand, (or at least after a warm up if you're stiff from your last workout). You have speed, strength, stamina, power, agility, flexibility, durability, ... and most importantly, availability because you're more injury resilient.

Plus performance training is F-U-N-! You get to lift stuff, throw stuff, jump, hop, skip, bound onto, over and around things. You get to sprint in the right manner and the right amount for you, which is a bonafide sign of youth. You get to learn new skills, practice them, master them and reap the benefits of them in the weirdest of ways in your life. You get to develop your body in such a way that it is the gym and it rewards you for every ounce of effort you put in by giving you so much more after. You get to play sports or participate in movement arts and physical adventures because you're in athlete shape so you only need to practice and learn the sport skill.

There is a reason people identify as athletes. Because it's awesome and the athlete lifestyle is contagious. Look at all the athleisure clothes. Smoothie bars. Adventure races. Boutique fitness. Even pickle ball.

  • Movement is fun.

  • Movement is contagious.

  • Motion is Lotion.

  • Motion causes emotion.

  • Movement is the fertilizer for the brain!

Adulting in the Athlete Lifestyle makes the most of the time you do have to address the important things unsaid (health) and said (body transformation & performance) while making movement fun and something you want to do, look forward to doing, actually do and can't wait to do again, so much so that it becomes a part of both your identity and your DNA and it influences your family tree and social circle because they want to have fun moving and living like you.
