Celebrities, business moguls, and heads of state worldwide have adorned the breathtakingly beautiful jewelry sold at Harry Winston International. And although he is no longer with us, the empire he built is still one of the most prestigious.
Many years ago while in his New York store, he got a call from a gem collector who was looking for an extremely rare type of diamond. When Winston told the collector that he had what he was looking for and that it was in the millions the gem collector said “I’ll be in touch with you. I’m going to come in next week.”
The following week he took his private jet and landed in New York. When he landed he was greeted by Harry Winston’s top salesman who brought him back to the store. The gem collector was escorted into the VIP room and for an hour the salesman showed him the stunning diamond he had traveled from another continent to see. An hour or so passed and the gem collector was leaving without expressing any interest in buying the unique diamond.
As fate would have it, just as he was about to leave the store Mr. Winston interrupted saying “Oh, excuse me, Sir, could I have a moment with you?” and they went back in the VIP room and 15 minutes later Harry Winston had a check in his hand for four million dollars!
As the gem collector was leaving to go back to the airport he said “Mr. Winston, can I ask you something personal?” and he said “Sure.” And he continued, “The man that brought me to your store and originally tried to sell me, he spent an hour with me... is he a good salesman?” Mr. Winston said “He’s the best one in the industry. He’s the top person in New York. That’s why I hired him. That’s why I pay him so much money.” And he said, “Well, Mr. Winston, if he’s so good, how come he spent an hour with me and he couldn’t sell me and you spent 15 minutes with me and you could?” Glowing with pride Mr. Winston replied “Oh, that’s my trade secret. You see, he knows diamonds but I love diamonds.”
It was the French philosopher Albert Camus who said, “A man's work is nothing but this slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first opened.”
