When you were a kid in grade school did your teacher ever ask you to put your listening ears on? It wasn't always easy for me to do because I had lots of ideas of my own swirling around in my mind. Do you agree that listening is the foundation of good communication? I've owned highly successful businesses and what I know for sure is that people have a need to be heard.
Being a good listener is a great skill to possess and I have learned that it’s one of the tools that can catapult you to the next level no matter what business you're in. However, having a system to break the ice and engage people is where some fall short. I stumbled across The FORM Method and I want to share it with you because it makes connecting with people fun and easy. Here’s what each letter stands for and how it can work for you:
F is for family, and this a great way to get people to open up and perhaps share photos about the people in their life they are most proud of
O is for occupation and now that they have opened up about their family it the perfect time to talk about the business they’re in
R is for recreation and that’s a great segue to get a person talking about what they enjoy doing or perhaps something on their bucket list or that they would do if they had more time
M is for the message and this is how you can discover what’s most important to them. For instance, you can ask them, "If time and money were not an issue what would you be doing right now?
Remember what Albert Einstein said, "I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious."
