| Why Do You Write? Why Do You Care So Much?
|
|
| | When I was little, I wanted to be a writer. I dabbled, I wrote silly poetry, including limericks.
When I was a young woman in college I got serious about my writing and wrote lots in my journal and asked myself why I was doing this.
Why did I want to be a writer? What did that even mean?
My answer then was "I don't know, but it's important to me."
That was enough at the time to keep going.
Because I knew that a writer writes.
I knew that because my mom told me that's what her grandmother said.
Great Gramma was a writer. She was a wonderful example of diligence, persistence, and always experimenting with new things up until the moment she died. (The family published her last poem.)
My Why for writing has changed over the years, but overall I'm driven to tell compelling stories that speak from my heart to my reader's hearts, because I love the magic of stories, and I love being able to create that magic.
What is your Why? - Do you know why you put in the long hours, days, years?
- What keeps you coming back after an "all is lost" moment?
- Why do you care so much about telling stories?
Hit reply. I'd love to hear.
Why is it important to know your why?
Because when times are tough, like they are now, our why is what brings us back to the page, back to the story, and back to the hard decisions we must make as artists.
This week I made a video on my why and shared a creativity tip here. (Or click on the image to access.) |
