Q: How long have you participated in the Group Coaching program?
A: I have been in the program since 2015. I joined up after having taken the first "Plan your Novel" class in late 2014 that helped me finish NaNoWriMo that year. (An earlier version of our 60-Day Novel course.)
Q: In your opinion, what are the three top most helpful aspects of the program?
A: The plethora of experience and sage advice from both Beth and Ezra.
- Beth has also gone through lots and lots of writing books out there and distilled them down to their essence while providing concrete examples.
- The sense of community with other writers
- The bi-monthly calls where we get to talk about writing but also get some focused laser coaching.
Q: Can you name one or two specific areas the program helped you improve in as a writer?
A: It's hard to pin it down. Definitely the character development. That has been a tougher area for me and all the coaching in that area has helped me create more believable characters with layers.
Also the lessons on deep POV where I have been able to bring my writing and the scenes more "into the heads" of my characters.
Q: Did you have any hesitation when you signed up, or renewed since then? What made you hesitate? What made you decide to sign up? A: I have had zero hesitation about signing up again. I'll keep signing up.
Q: If you were telling a new writer about the group coaching program and only had one sentence to explain it, what would it be? A: Writing a novel can be a scary thing.
We often start not knowing what we do and get lost and frustrated, often leading us to give up easily.
Beth creates a map for us, but not a rigid one.
She provides guidelines that help us understand the hows and whys of genre fiction, helping new writers avoid the pitfalls that turn people away from following their dreams. It's more than technique, however.
Beth really cares about her students and is very giving of her time and knowledge.
Thank you, Hugh!
And thank you to Ann Woodford for conducting this interview.

| Next, I'd like to share with you a lesson from our editing class, so that you can use it to get moving on your editing.

Your Strengths and Weaknesses in Editing Your Fiction
Before you can improve as a fiction writer, it would serve you well to assess your current situation.
To that end, we want to help you assess and evaluate your strengths and weaknesses.
Here’s one of our assessments we encourage all of our students to do.
Do this before you start your first read-through of your manuscript. We also ask you to do this so that you can later see how far you've come. What are your strengths & weaknesses in editing your fiction?
We ask you this question in a very open way, so that you can reflect on the topic in whatever way that flows.
To focus your assessment, think about these aspects of editing: - Story Structure / Plot (Include: pacing, tied loose ends, structure (Act 1-3), readers' expectations)
- Character (GMC, POV, setting, voice, dialogue, consistency, readers' expectations)
- Proofing (Grammar, punctuation, word usage, typos)
- Include also other factors like: mindset, attitude, emotions.
I’m curious! Hit reply and let me know your thoughts.
