| | There’s no such thing as a missed opportunity.
Hear me out.
Common wisdom in business and the whole FOMO thing (fear of missing out) is based on this notion that you might miss the boat and then lose: experiences, things, friends?
But were you ready for that thing in the first place?
Maybe you just weren’t ready. Your attention was on something else. You didn’t really have the money or the time to take advantage of the opportunity.
How many courses have you bought that you’ve never looked at, that sit on your hard drive?
I'm raising my hand high.
Yes, I have purchased my share of courses that I haven’t *yet* cracked open and studied.
(I’m thinking about creating a designated study hall for myself to get to those things in a more organized and disciplined way.)
But maybe you are ready to reach for that new thing, that new experience.
Maybe you’ve been sitting on that story idea for a while, maybe months, maybe years.
And now the story idea is choosing you, tapping you on the shoulder, and you’re feeling two parts scared and one and a half parts excited.
You’re ready — getting ready — almost ready to start your novel. Or story. Or whatever it wants to be, but you’re not sure.
Are you ready to find out? Are you ready to pull the story thread and open the bag of mysteries you’ve been carrying for awhile?
Or maybe that half finished manuscript you were stuck on and set aside is whispering to you, the characters chattering softly, and you know if you stopped to listen and write you’d unknot the gnarly mess the story is in. If you knew how.
There are no missed opportunities, only stages of readiness.
Don’t make yourself wrong for not having started or finished your book.
Ask yourself if you’re ready to do what’s next.
What’s next could look like (what you're ready to do):
— write down your story ideas — write your story more often, more regularly; nurture the relationship with your muse, your story, your ability to put hand to page — get support — take a class — join a writing community
What else are you ready for?
