The gap between where you are and where you want to be

Sept. 22, 2017 Oakland, CA
Hi Friend, I know the struggle of writing a novel intimately.
I spent 12 years wishing, wanting, and yearning to be a novelist.
But it wasn’t until I realized that I needed to stop dreaming and start doing that my dreams of being a novelist became a reality.
What changed for me?
Taking action.
Taking baby steps.
Being in a supportive environment of other doers, writing, like me.
And lastly, being accountable to others to turn in pages.
That last bit was the scariest but the most necessary part to pulling me forward to that state I truly desired: holding a finished manuscript in my hands.
A miraculous thing happened when I put myself in this accountability environment -- a critique group that met regularly: my novel got written. I should more accurately say, I wrote my novel.
It did take me five years, that first book. But I. Did. It.
From that starting point of my commitment 19 years ago, I have now written 16 novels, 3 nonfiction books, and countless articles. I'm published in 2 fiction genres and am working on a third.
And as one of our group members recently shared in one of our monthly calls, “There is *nothing* like the pleasure of typing THE END at the end of my book.”
