The Truth of Revisions + News đź’—

August 7, 2020
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,
Welcome back to Creativity Sparks. I took July off from the newsletter and most social media (all but Twitter) and the break was welcome.

I hope your July was relaxing, fruitful, and all the things you needed it to be. How have you been? How has your creative work been going?

I've been using my extra time to deepen into my revisions for my novel coming out mid-October. But it hasn't been easy. I struggled with several/many things:
  • I put enormous pressure on myself to work 3 hours a day on the book, but only managed a few days like that. Mostly I managed 1 hour per day, 5-6 days per week. I was really hard on myself about that and shared my feelings with my friends. They reminded me of self-forgiveness and grace.

  • I realized that my publication date of mid-Sept was too soon, so I moved the date to mid-October. I'd put this book on pre-order to create some fire under me, but that backfired. Instead I was feeling squeezed, instead of motivated.

  • I had to let go of some things -- fear, hopelessness, anger -- to find my commitment. It's not fair to say "let go." It's more like I felt deeply these emotions/pains.

  • I realized that the themes of my science fiction mystery are present and relevant in today's intense world. That made me break down again and realize even more how important my project is.

  • I knew I had truly deepened my commitment when I woke up with the story on my mind and was wondering how my main character would react to this and that. She was finally living inside of me.

  • I also knew I was 100% in the work of revisions when I said to myself, "I can do this."

  • I have accepted that I need a bubble of space before and after the work -- space of nothing, or noodling, or playing games, or walking. Final revisions is full of hard decisions, so I need lots of empty/nothing time to let my creative mind do whatever it needs to do for this process.
That's it for now. I'm sure there's more realizations, but now I'm thinking about my book. :)
