When I first finished my debut fantasy novel (back in 2005 - I think), I was terrified to show it to anyone. You'd think that after pouring my heart and soul into 263 pages, I'd be eager to share it with the world.
But actually, I was convinced it was terrible. I was sure that if anyone read it, they'd realize I was a fraud who had no business writing fantasy.
What's more, I almost gave up on the story entirely. I came close to shelving it and starting something new, hoping the next project would be "good enough."
Why am I sharing this? Well…
If you're stressed about your first draft not being perfect, remember you can still transform it into an amazing novel.
That "terrible" first draft of mine?
Over the course of the next 6 years, I worked hard to edit, revise, and polish that story with the help of my critique partners and beta readers. I went through so many revisions I lost track. Then I published it myself.
This book went on to win awards and launch my career as a fantasy author.
I believe in you so much. And I've seen this to be true for myself and hundreds of writers I've coached: your first draft is just the beginning of something wonderful. ❤️
