Hi Friend,

In between last minute preparations for our first film shoot in a few days (OMG - so many things - partial list here), I'm putting the finishing touches on a new workbook, Essential Character Traits.

So I'm thinking about a character's drivers - what drives them, what motivates them deeply.

I don't know about you but I find the answer sometimes hard to sort out.

So I interview my character and ask them questions like:

  • What gets you up in the morning?

  • What would you do, if you could do anything?

  • What will having that do for you?

I recommend you interview your characters by asking these questions and more.

Get into their heart and mind.

Write for-your-eyes-only journal entries in their most private voice.

You got this!

What questions do you have about getting to know your characters better, so that you can write compelling, engrossing, delicious novels that keep your readers up at night?

I'd love to hear.

Hit reply and let me know.

I read and reply to every email, though sometimes it may take me a little while.

Gotta sleep sometime!

On to the podcast...

The Challenge of Imagining Thrutopias with Jennifer Browdy, Pt. 1 of 2

“Human creativity, the amazing thing about it is that we can come up with a thought that's never been thought before.

We have these dreams that come to us that are totally unique and nobody but each one of us can have that particular perspective tied into our life experience and our culture and our location and who we are uniquely.“

- Jennifer Browdy

In this episode, Jennifer and I discuss:

  • her “Women Write the World” class where she shares what’s it’s like working with a diverse cultural group

  • how AI and Chat GPT does not know the future and how we can use it to our own advantage

  • And more! :)
