Start Planning Your Novel with These Actionable Tips

I hope you can join us for our free webinar tomorrow on getting ready for Nanowrimo. We have some specific novel planning tips for you.
When: Tuesday, September 27, 2016: 5pm Pacific/8pm Eastern, 90-minutes
One of the tips we'll share will be about genre.
Ezra and I write genre stories. I write YA fantasy and fantasy romance. Ezra writes suspense, mystery, and thrillers.
Take note of your genre. This will give you a general idea of your story ending. If you're not sure what your genre is, take a guess and start there.
Preparing your novel is just about testing ideas and seeing how they fit together.
What is genre?
There are many many definitions of genre in fiction, and story telling in general.
I really like how Shawn Coyne states it his blog (and book of the same name, Story Grid), StoryGrid.com:
"A Genre is a label that tells the reader/audience what to expect. Genres simply manage audience expectations."
You probably already know your expectations of your genre. Hopefully, you read what you want to write.
Exercise List the main expectations of your genre. - What are typical beginnings like?
- What are middles like, rising action and conflict?
- What are endings typically like?
- What kinds of characters typically populate these stories?
- What are the main characters generally like?
You may think that genre is about formula, but it's not. It's story structure like any other. And it's about form.
What you do within that form is open to your imagination.
