Producing an Emotional Response in Readers (+ a taste of "How to Choose Your Story's Structure")
|
|
|
|
Our job as fiction writers is to evoke an emotional response in the reader. Not an easy job to do.
Probably as you are, I'm always on the hunt to understand this job of ours better.
I've studied and taught this via the body's senses and practiced it in my fiction, but I can always learn more.
Here's a good article overview by Donald Maas I found this week called, "How to Produce an Emotional Response in Readers: Inner Mode, Outer Mode, and Other Mode."
Enjoy!
Also!
We had a great time on the live training Wednesday evening, where I compared five compelling story structures and talked about the strengths and weaknesses of each... as well as how they line up with each other.
If you'd like to hear my talk about 5-point plot structure, you can watch a 7-minute video excerpt here:

(If you signed up for the full training already, we sent out instructions for accessing the replay yesterday, so check your email -- and your spam folder -- if you haven't seen it come through yet.)
Have a great week!
All my best, Beth
P.S. If you missed How to Choose Your Story's Structure and wish you'd jumped in... you can still get it for the introductory price of $27 if you sign up before noon tomorrow (Saturday, March 24, 25, 12noon Pacific).
