Mindset of a Novelist, plus Cool Learning Opportunities

January 22, 2015

Hi Friend,

I hope January is cooking for you!

Our Edit Your Novel January bootcamp is in its last week. Wow! I've really enjoyed teaching this course. It will be a homestudy course soon.

I'm deeper in the throes of editing book 3 in my Henrietta The Dragon Slayer series (new series name), and loving it. I love my ending -- I've revised the last 40 pages twice in the last week -- but the beginning is a mess. Since I tell this story in five points of view, I think I'll revise one character's thread at a time, and avoid the beginning for a while longer.

I'm also excited to wrap up the promotions for my latest romance, A Cupcake Christmas, with a fun Facebook party on Saturday, Jan. 30, 11am to 4pm Pacific. (Stop by for prizes and chatting!)

Leo the Cat has put on winter weight and loves, as always, to occupy my lap. (Cute Instagram pic)

Ezra is working on his third novel and recently laid out all the cards to organize his story. (Facebook image)

We're having a good time over here in Barany land.

On to what's cooking...

Mindset of a Novelist

A big part of my mission is to craft a successful and sustainable career for myself and to support my clients on this path.

Recently, I've been working long hours, and then sleeping long hours too, to recover. And then getting the beginnings of the cold, and need to rest more.

Not so sustainable.

I got to thinking about what I mean by sustainable. Perhaps you're wondering the same thing too.

How do you write, and have a day job, and run a household, and sleep?

Being a novelist is a marathon career. We need to be able to stick with a project for a long time to see it through to a successful completion.

In years past, I'd let the daunting nature of editing completely stop me in my tracks. I've heard the same thing from other writers.

But now, with a clear goal -- to publish this book by June -- and a deep emotional attachment to my story and characters -- I'm finding the strength and endurance needed to break through my fears and pick up the pace of my editing.

I want to be able to both pick up my editing pace and not get burnt out. How do you do that?

You envision what sustainable means.

Ask: How will you know when you have that?

Use the tools of fiction to sink into the five senses of that experience.

  • What does sustainable look like? What will you be doing?
  • What does a sustainable career as a novelist feel like?
  • Are there sounds, smells, tastes associated with your sustainable author career?
For me, I see myself sitting at cafes or in my office, working on my books, feeling as if I have all the time in world to create and innovate. I'm productive, happy with my work, and feel supported by the people and other activities in my life. The taste I associate with this feeling is cappuccinos, since I often drink those while I work on my books. The smells is fresh ground coffee, and my soundtrack is Florence & the Machine and similar music.

Your turn!

Hit reply and share with me what a sustainable author career is like for you. Use all 5 senses!
