I was talking to a writer in one of my Discovery calls and learned a few things about her: she was passionate about writing stories to change the world and she said she was horrible at marketing.
I think she may have even said, "I hate marketing."
Now, I wasn't about to change her mind.
That's not my job.
My job is to ask questions, inquire, be curious.
I'm a coach and a teacher -- a professional facilitator, nudger, and way pointer. "This way to...(wherever you want to go)..."
And a professional question asker...
So, I was curious why she didn't like marketing, why she thought she was horrible at it.
I don't remember her specific reply, but I do remember other people's replies, because I've heard them many times, things like...
...sales are yucky... ...I only want to write... a publisher will sell for me... ...I just can't...
I hear you, and have even felt similarly...but then, some teachers and coaches asked me questions, questions a lot like these...
What if sales wasn't yucky, but actually you offering your gifts to the world, and what if you knew how to do that in a way you could stay 100% in integrity with your values?
What if you were an boon to a publisher because you could do book promotions and weren't afraid of it, but could partner with them?
What if you could do book marketing and promotions because you learned the skill set and made it your own, just the way you've made the writing process your own?
What if...?
What are your "what-if" questions? What are you curious about?
Hit reply and let me know.
My answers to these what-if questions changed everything for me. I relaxed around book marketing and promotions, learned some tools, adapted others, and started my foray into how to make it book marketing and promotions my own, including ways to make it enjoyable.
One of those tools I'll be teaching tomorrow on how to write the author branding statement -- an essential tool in every writers toolkit.
