I Take A Stand: Art Can Change The World, But Not Just Art

June 19, 2020
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,
When I was a child I read late into the night and was driven to be a writer. I scribbled in artist notepads and lined paper.

I didn't know what I was doing, only that I needed to do it. To not write and read didn't even occur to me. I needed to move my hand across the page and to disappear into stories like I needed to breath.

I knew as a reader that there was power and magic in words and I wanted to know how to wield this power and magic for myself.

So I worked diligently at writing over the years, read a ton of craft-related books, and as an adult took writing classes. Most of all I learned from my more advanced peers and got my work critiqued -- a lot.

I had many choice points over the years where I had to re-commit to my writing, where I had to ask myself again if I wanted to be a novelist.

The answer is yes.

I am clear about it now. I am an artist who has chosen writing fiction as my art.

Welling up from deep within are emotions and opinions that want to flower and take root into the world.

Now I can plant my passionate feelings into the world via my fiction.

Through our art, we can awaken the spirits and stir the hearts of others. We can take a stand for the hard truths of this world.

Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Juneteeth independence day, an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, the last of the Confederate states.

To support Black artists, buy a book from a Black author; support a Black owned business and diversity in media. Speak up for equality and justice.

Let’s support Black Publishing Power. Now and on Juneteenth.

I bought Jasmine Johnson's lgbt+ fantasy novel, Nyx's Chosen (The Awakening Book 1), and look forward to reading it.

In Jasmine's words:

For the next week, we are coming together to support Black authors. As a young black author myself, I will be showing all the support I can this week and I encourage you to do the same!

All of my books are available on Amazon and I have autographed copies of Wrath/Patience and a Giveaway for Nyx’s Chosen live on my website right now (JasmineJohnsonBooks.com).

WRITING CRAFT CORNER

There is still a few days to join J. Thorn's 5-day challenge to supercharge your scene.

Writing great scenes is a skill you can learn. J. Thorn will teach you:

-- How to decide which scene or article you want to write and why you must write it.

-- How to frame the scene so you know what you want the scene or article to accomplish.

-- How to ignite the motivations of your protagonist and antagonist.

-- How to guarantee that your scene or article explodes on the page.

-- How to create a difficult, complicated decision for your protagonist that readers can’t possibly ignore.

-- How to utilize the protagonist’s consequence when you start the next scene.

My friend and fellow author, J. Thorn, is hosting a FREE 5-day challenge to teach you how to Supercharge Your Scene. You’re going to want to take a look at this right now before it goes away:

Have a happy and creative week!

All my best,

Beth
