Personal Note from Beth
I stayed up quite late last night reading a friend's upcoming memoir on how he became a keynote speaker. Yep, I'm one of his beta readers.
I finished his book at 3am and because I was so inspired by his book, got up, put on some sweats, and answered some emails that had been lingering in my inbox.
I love being impacted by what I read. I love being taken to a new place, and into the minds and hearts of another.
What do you love about reading?
Reminder: Next week, I will be attending the annual Romance Writer's of America National conference in New York City. If you're at the conference too, let me know. I'm booking coffee dates now.
On to our Q&A.

| | Q&A on Novel Editing
(You can read Part 1 on mindset here, Part 2 on getting feedback here, and Part 3 on Beta Readers here.)
On Sending a Big/Long Book to Beta Readers Q: " If your manuscript is more than 100K, would you send it in sections so not to overwhelm your Beta readers?" ~ Candace C. Davenport, JD, Publishing Consultant, www.OurLittleBooks.com
A: Thanks for your question, Candace! Sure, offer your beta readers this option -- to read your book in pieces -- and see what they want. Personally, I'd only offer it as a full book, since that's the reader's experience anyway -- to get the whole book at once time.
Testimonial for Beta Reader Groups Author, Carol Malone ( Ladies Night: Fight Card) wrote: "I have put Sunday Punch out there in a beta-reader group and got terrific feedback which I was able to incorporate to make it better. Then I read for others. So it’s a nice trade-off."
It is a nice trade-off, Carol! Glad you're getting terrific feedback!
On Stepping into Your Reader's Mind Q: "This is a great treatise on editing and I really felt the part about getting into the head of my reader and seeing my manuscript through their eyes. Do we continue to edit like that, or is that only for observation purposes?" ~ Carol Malone ( Ladies Night: Fight Card), http://carolmalone.net/
A: Thanks for the question, Carol! Yes, continue to edit like that. We edit our book for our readers -- the whole time, every step of the way. And yes, there are times where you sit back into the seat of the creative writer: when you want to rewrite something and need to daydream new material/new scene; when you're picking just the right word -- then too you need to sink into your creative heart and let your intuition guide you to the right feeling word. But you have one eye on what your readers resonate with as you do that. All this in the editing/revising/polishing stage. Not during your first draft -- the pour-it-out-of-your-heart-and-soul stage. But each time you want to evaluate your work, put yourself back into the heart/mind/body of your reader.
What questions do you have about editing your novel?
Hit reply and let me know. I'm always interested in hearing from you! All my best,
♥
Beth
