| Future of Indie Authorship + Our Work
|

|
| | One of the things I love about being an author in this day and age is I get to investigate and try new things.
Including the Espresso Book Machine.
Anybody can walk into one of their New York City's Shakespeare & Co bookstores, of which there are currently two (plus one in Philadelphia), and print out a book using their Espresso Book Machine.
How cool is that.
Is it a gimmick? I don't know. But I want to see it in action!
Unfortunately it's a long walk from Oakland, California to the Big Apple.
It is expensive to print with the Espresso Book Machine; a 150-page book is $17.50. And the book is printed with a generic cover. (The print edition of my novel, Henrietta The Dragon Slayer is $9.99 on Amazon and has 263 pages.)
Lastly, even though the Espresso Book Machine has been around for at least 10 years, this tool isn't widespread or competitive on price.
But in one area it is unique.
If you want a book the same day, and it's not on the bookstore shelves, but is in the online catalog, you can have them print it out for you in the time it takes for you get your espresso at the bookstore cafe.
More about the Espresso Book Machine here:
More about Shakespeare & Co's expansion:
If you're an indie author with less than 100 titles (Ezra and I are in that category at 30+ titles combined), then you can get your books in the Espresso Book Machine by following the instructions here:
In summary, I'm excited about the potential of the Espresso Book Machine. Wouldn't it be cool if every indie bookstore could have one? Or maybe a cafe could have one? Or the local YMCA... make some money for the community and the author.
What do you think about this technology and its potential to impact your life as an author? Hit reply and let me know. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

| On Creativity and Work
I've been working on an article about work as a creative. Well, I've written the first draft, but haven't yet gone back to my mess to clean it up and make it presentable.
So I'll touch on one of my main points here:
Essentially, our job as writers is to write -- to show up, focus our attention on our current work in progress, and put words on the page.
What I'm talking about is about the repetition of this habit to create a writer's life.
But what happens when the ideas don't come?
Instead of pushing, what if you took a breath, stepped into compassion for yourself and your process, and took a break from your work?
(As I did last week and why there was no newsletter last Friday.)
What would that be like?
I'll stop here for now and come back to this topic next time.

| Have a happy and creative week! Happy writing!
