From a Spark Grow a Novel
+ Special Webinar Soon!
Sept. 20, 2016
Oakland, California

Hi Friend,

I believe our stories are important. Fiction is important. Stories teach us how to be in the world.

Dedicated to writing fiction as I assume you are, you get to learn the craft of writing stories as well as nurture the artist within.

Sometimes stories start as a spark, though it can be difficult to know how to nurture that spark into a fully fleshed out novel.

How do story sparks come to you?

You may get an idea for your novel from a moment you experience or a moment you've witnessed. The idea may come in a dream, or from a favorite game, book, or movie.

I got an idea for a story from two images on my wall: a dragon and a picture of Paris I took. I asked myself, "What if there was a dragon in Paris?" That idea grew into my paranormal romance novella, Parisian Amour.

For the longest time though I didn't know what to do with the ideas that sparkled like gems. I didn't know how to turn the notions into novels.

It took many years of trial and error to find ways to turn my sparks and notions into story.

One of my ways into story is the hero's journey. A favorite resource for that is The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler

Another way into the story is the tool exploring of the Goal, Motivation, Conflict of my main character, as shared in Goal, Motivation, Conflict by Deb Dixon.

My husband, novelist and co-teacher in the Plan Your Novel course and in most of the courses in the Barany School of Fiction, loves the problem-solution tool.

We describe the tool here.

I believe that each author needs to and can find their own way into story. You may need a nudge, you may to learn more options, you may need to be surrounded by like-minded writers.

What do you need to take your story sparks into form?

Hit "reply" and let me know.
