Embracing Limits to Get The Writing Done
|
|
| | Lately I’ve been emptying my inbox with one-click: archive.
If I haven’t read it by the end of the day, it’s out, filed, out of my view.
Except for the emails that are high priority and I try to keep that list to no more than 20. Really, who needs a to-do list longer than that? (Even that is too much.)
I just can’t get it all done, no matter how much I want to or think I have the energy for.
It’s impossible and I no longer have the energy for it.
I’m as driven as ever but my energy flags sooner and I can’t pull long days on little sleep like I used to. (Aging, grrr.)
I also need to not wear out my arms. My repetitive stress injury threatens to return each time I work too much or play games on my phone for too long because I need to de-stress.
So what’s the answer?
Anything that isn’t top priority goes into Archives, a box, storage, the recycling bin etc.
What’s top priority?
- My health – (get more sleep, Beth!) including exercise
- My creativity – working on my edits and doing research for the next round of edits
- My “nothing” time – where I noodle, wander, meander, relax with dear friends where nothing has to be said if we don’t want it to
- My heart – lots of hugs with Ezra and lots of cuddles with the cats
Like you, I’m a busy creative, ideas are popping all the time.
I have to say “No for now” to most of them too. But first I say “Yes, thank you, you’ll go on the list” and put them into Evernote (if they’re random) or into the appropriate Scrivener file (for works-in-progress), or into the Notes app when I can’t reach the other two programs, or it’s the easiest place to write a note.
What is top priority for you? How can you clear your mind, your desk, your living space, so you can focus on it?
Hit reply. I’d love to hear your list.
