4 November 2016Oakland, CA
Dear Friend,
I've joined the frenzy that is NaNoWriMo. (National Novel Writing Month, happening now.) It's messy. I have doubts.
But I'm setting aside those doubts to write, so that this story can take shape.
In the dark. In the quiet. Away from my awesome NaNo buddies.
Let me explain.
In years past, I've done NaNoWriMo, but beyond checking into the nanowrimo.org site at the beginning of November, I never went back to the site.
This year I did more. I added a fake cover, a fake title, and I added buddies.
Then I got caught in the comparison trap. As I smiled at my friends' avatars, I couldn't help but notice how many words they'd already written. Wow! Hats off. It was only Day 2.
But...
My confidence dropped.
My enthusiasm for my tiny nascent story soured.
And I felt depressed.
So, I love you, my writing buddies, but I need to unfriend y'all from my Nano page, take down my fake title and cover, and go back into the dark of my writing cave.
From there I can grow this precious little story, until it's a robust big story.
My enthusiasm has returned, my focus too. I'm excited to write it. Enough said. :)
Use NaNo however you want, or not at all.
And use our free Plan Your Novel mini-course to gain clarity in whatever way the works for you, like science fiction romance author, Greta Van Der Rol, shared here.
I love supporting authors to write their books in the way that's right for them, during NaNo, because we're each unique.
Discover your best writing process by trial and error. Get in there and play -- for real.
If you'd like support this month while you write and want to join in our live weekly calls, in an intimate space, then join us in the Write Your Novel Support Group.
