Take Stock of Your Writing Accomplishments

June 29, 2016
Oakland, California

Hi Friend,

Can you believe it? Half of 2016 is nearly over. Wowza!

It's a good time to take stock of your accomplishments and notice two things:

-- what you saw and experienced that worked
-- what you saw and experienced that you'd like more of

These two kinds of feedback are directly inspired by my training at NLP Marin and the brilliant work of Carl Buchheit.

Be nice to yourself and say three positive things to one thing to work on. Three to one! I'll show you what I mean in my example.

My list:
-- I edited and published the third book in my YA fantasy, and ran a short marketing campaign for the first two books in the series.
-- I taught four courses at the Barany School of Fiction: Editing for Novelists, How to Get Book Reviews, Branding and Marketing for Novelists, Book Launches and Campaigns.
-- I took a training course at NLP Marin, and also worked as a TA for one of their intensive courses.
-- I took a speaking course for women.
-- I edited clients' manuscripts.
-- I slept, kissed Ezra, and pet Leo. :)

Okay that last one was part of my self-care.

What I saw that worked:
-- I worked on my book in the morning and my business in the afternoon and evenings, for the most part. I liked that type of schedule.
-- I liked teaching the Barany School of Fiction this spring.
-- I'm proud of myself for asking for lots of beta readers and getting over ten.

What I'd like more of:
-- I would like to see and experience more physical activity.

Your turn:
Take stock of your accomplishments and notice what worked, at least a few things. And notice one thing you'd like more of.

Hit reply and let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Annual Plan Your Novel: 30-Day Writing Challenge course
Join us for our Third Annual Plan Your Novel Course!

This course is designed for the writer with a life.

In our 30-Day Writing Challenge, we will help you think and write through the steps to create your novel — from character development to plot structure to story themes and world building — so that you can start NaNoWriMo prepared.

This class is good for you:

-- If you have never written a novel, and have always wanted to, and still feel lost on how to go from brilliant idea to The End, then you will be stretched in new and different ways.

-- If you’re an experienced novelist, with 1 or 2 completed or partially completed novels under your bed. You may find this course structured in a way that’s new to you and yet familiar.

-- If you have 5 or more unfinished novels sitting in a drawer, and always hit that sagging middle and lose focus or lose interest, this course will help you dream up exciting ways to torture, I mean challenge, your characters all the way to the resolution of the story.

This course is structured this way:

Week 1: Elevator Pitch & Short Synopsis
Week 2: Get to Know Your Main Characters
