Best kept secrets to writing a novel - Bet you know these! ♥️

September 21, 2022
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,
Clients and students are both surprised and relieved to learn that I have to restart my focus, like, five times a day. Not kidding.

It's like some part of my brain forgets that I'm writer, forgets what I'm doing with my life, what I want -- all of it.

But then I remember.

Something happens... I usually throw an internal tantrum and to calm down, I'll take a stomping walk up (and down) the steep hills in my neighborhood. Then I calm down, connect to my heart, and reconnect to what's next for me from this internalized list.

What I'm calling -- very tongue in cheek -- the best kept secrets to writing a novel. I bet you know many of these if not all.
  • Build a writing habit. Regular and sustainable works better than following some rule others created.
  • Practice self-compassion, which comes in handy as you learn to write whatever, no self-censorship; the power of the writing comes from the truth, as well as expressing reality as you see it (or as your character sees it) through the senses.
  • Practice the ability to show up day after day. Yes, habits.
  • Practice trust -- the ability to trust the unseen and unknown. We don’t know where creativity comes from. We don’t know where language comes from, we don’t know where life comes from, but we can shape and mold and guide and direct.
  • Find a community. Writers may write alone (most do) but they succeed together.
  • Practice being an audience. We write to be read. even if it’s by an audience of one - yourself.
  • Bring your whole self. You are putting yourself in your stories and it is scary, and it’s alive. We want aliveness in our stories.
What else would you put on this list?

Do you need any support with stepping into these practices?

If so, reach out to me for a discovery call, where we explore together how I may support you.
