Last week I recounted 3 big lessons that my breast cancer journey gave to me. If you missed last week’s email, I highly encourage you to go read it and watch last week's video. Since last month was my 8-year cancer anniversary, I spent much of the past month thinking about how I got through it all. Let me set the stage for you a bit. . .
My cancer was fast-growing and looked as bad as it possibly could have under a microscope (apparently that matters for prognosis). It was clear that my doctors feared that my cancer had spread, which would have been a death sentence. The first week after diagnosis I practically lived at the hospital for tests, doctor appointments, procedures, and yet more tests.
And then treatment started (which was hard on my body).
I was terrified that I'd die and leave my boys (who were 2 and 6) behind.
There was a moment several weeks into all of this when I started sobbing and ended up screaming at the top of my lungs (luckily, I was the only one home at the time).
I remember thinking. . . Heather, you're losing it!
Not long after, a friend gave me a book about gratitude.
You’d think that this glass is half-full girl would have been big on gratitude. But up until that point I was a skeptic.
Yet I decided to give it a try because I was desperate and had nothing to lose. . Friend, gratitude saved my sanity.
It reminded me that there are so many (little) things to enjoy in life and that I was still ALIVE (so should start living my life regardless of my cancer). That’s why today I have a quick video for you that covers: - How gratitude affects your brain, changes how you think and increases happiness (even resilience to stress).
- How gratitude can help even during hard times.
- Exactly how to practice gratitude in 5 short, simple steps.
If you’ve ever wanted to give gratitude a try I’m here to tell you to do it. And if you’re a gratitude skeptic, I ask you not to knock it until you’ve given it an honest try.
It’s one of the easiest and simplest things you can do that will absolutely make a difference in your life.
Go watch the video and then hit reply to this email and tell me 1 thing that you're grateful for today.
XO,
Heather
