Subject: That time my dress split

I was a freshman in college. My date was a cute frat boy (and former state champion wrestler).

Because the event was formal (and I didn’t have a dress or the money to buy one), I borrowed a cute black dress from a friend. It was a bit tight, but I wore it because it looked ah-mazing on me.

And then it happened. . .

As I got into my date’s car, the back seam of my dress ripped. You could hear it happening from 10 feet away.

I spent the next hour sewing the dress back together by hand, thinking he'd never ask me out again and that I'd forever be known in the fraternity house as the “fat” girl who split her dress.. [Never mind that I only weighed 100 lbs].

This story might sound silly now, but at the time it was a big deal. And it’s the type of reaction I had for years whenever anything went wrong because I didn't learn how to manage my mind until my late 30’s. Because of that, I was robbed of so much joy in life.

Friend, do you also sometimes go into a tailspin of worry, doubt and anxiety when things go off-track?

I’m proof that it’s never too late to learn how to manage your mind. So long as you do that, you can deal with anything that life happens to throw your way.

No matter how embarrassing. Regardless of how heavy life feels. Even when battling an aggressive breast cancer or dealing with an unplanned financial hit because your spouse was laid off during a global pandemic.

Be sure that you do whatever you can to cultivate and manage your mentality. Not only is that what creates real happiness and contentment, but it’s what enables you to think more creatively and see the opportunities out there.

Wondering what happened with the cute frat boy? We recently celebrated 21 years of marriage.

XO,

Heather
