I was so stunned that I audibly gasped. Okay, so let me back up a moment...
I was having lunch with a dear friend & mentor several years after he retired, and it was time to tell him that I was leaving law to start a new business.
Heart racing, I nervously rushed through my (overly prepared) explanation thinking he wouldn't understand.
But when I was done, he said. . . "I wish I'd had someone like you to talk to 20 years ago. I spent the last 15 years of my career resenting my own clients."
Say what? This man was the epitome of success:
- Big book of business.
- Made lots of money.
- Respected by everyone.
- Part of management.
He was the one you were supposed to emulate! That's when I realized that we were talking about the same thing: changing priorities.
The difference was that he had allowed his fears around failure and what others might think to stop him from doing anything about it (something I was determined NOT to let happen).
Why tell you this?
Your priorities will change over the course of your life, Friend. I don't want you to end up bitter or resentful (like my mentor).
