Stomach full of knots, I opened my mouth to ask for their business... and switched topics. I never did ask (and lost the chance a few weeks later when this potential client hired another law firm).
This was back in February 2009. I'd recently lost all of my business (thanks to the 2008 financial crisis), and was trying to pivot my law practice.
I thought I was just afraid to ask for the business, but the truth was that I felt utterly overwhelmed. I didn't have a clear plan. Heck, I didn't even know what I wanted (out of my practice or career).
I felt lost.
I cried in the elevator on the way back up to my office. But it was a good cry because it's what convinced me to get serious about my efforts.
My first steps? To lean into my values and lead with my strengths.
THAT's what enabled me to (1) figure out what I wanted out of my practice and (2) take strategic action to make it happen.
So that I could forge a path of my own instead of aimlessly mirroring what other partners did.
And it worked! Just 2 years later, my practice collected more than $1MM in revenues.
This doesn't just apply to lawyers trying to build your business. It's applicable to anyone (including you, Friend).
