Well in the UK the tradition of the Maypole and all of the festivities originated as a Pagan Festival from around Roman times.
It is associated with the first day of summer, Beltane, the Celts, fun, fertility, the May queen, Jack in the green, aka the green man, the hobby horse and morris dancing.
Many European countries celebrate Mayday in similar ways and in the USA it is known as International Workers' Day and celebrates the achievements of workers.
