As a copywriter information overload is your worst enemy.
Influencer X is telling you to do one thing, and influencer Y is telling you another.
In both cases, they're probably trying to sell you something.
So, instead of paying $100 for another course, here's the step-by-step process I'd follow to learn copywriting in one year.
Step 1: Learning Phase (Months 1-3)
Copywriting has a steep learning curve and the more time you can spend studying the better.
But no matter what spend at least an hour a day doing this.
When it comes to learning the basics you want to learn from the best.
These three books will teach you more than any modern copywriting course:
No B.S. Marketing Dan Kennedy
Scientific Advertising by Claude C. Hopkins.
Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz
Spend 30 minutes a day studying and 30 minutes applying what you've learned by breaking down copy.
This will help you to build a strong foundation.
Step 2: Experience Building (Months 3-6)
After studying for a few months you should have a good understanding of the basics.
Now it's time to put what you've learned to practice.
Send messages to:
> People you know
> Friends on social media
> Aquantces on social media
And offer to rewrite their copy for a testimonial.
Most people will say yes.
Build up your testimonials and then start asking for a small payment.
The aim here is to build reps, not create life-changing money.
Step 3: Outreach (Months 6-9)
After getting your first few testimonials, it's time to scale your business.
Here you have two options.
Number 1: Mass cold emails
In short, send hundreds of templated cold emails a day.
Number 2: Tailored outreach
Find a business you want to work with and sign up for their email list.
Rewrite two of their emails and send it over to them.
You should get a response rate of around 20%.
Sign the client and start generating results.
Step 4: Scaling (Months 9-12)
By now, you should have a few clients, testimonials, and results.
It's time to up your outreach method and potentially take on a writer to help you deliver results.
You can do this by hiring on social media, forums, groups or freelancing sites.
But this is crucial...
You need to find the right person.
In my experience, that's someone who's curious, wants to learn, and is willing to take feedback.
----------------------------
Throughout all of these stages, you need to continue doing the previous stage.
For example, while building experience, you want to be studying for at least an hour a day.
And while you're doing outreach you also want to be studying and building experience.
The moment you stop learning is the moment the competition starts to catch up.
This timeframe can also be shortened if you have the time.
However you'll quickly learn that everything in business takes longer than you expect it.
Be patient and enjoy the journey.
I hope this helps you.
Let me know if you have any questions.
