One of my coaching students was recently offered a contract from a prospect.
At first glance it looked good.
The prospect had a good reputation, a strong offer and seemed to be a good fit.
But there was one problem...
They were offering a commission only contract.
This required the prospect to organise a call, convert and onboard the prospect...
Just for my student to get paid.
And while these contracts can be lucrative...
9 times out of 10 the writer is taken advantage of.
I've heard endless stories about clients who demanded huge amounts of work, contacted writers 24/7 and just didn't pay when they actually saw results.
So if you're offered a similar contract here's what you should do instead.
Ask for a small amount of money upfront.
This can be as low as $50-100.
Once the prospect pays two things will happen.
Firstly, they're actually going to value your work.
Naturally, humans don't value anything that's free.
Just think about how many courses you've received for free and never even opened...
Secondly, you'll have solid proof that the client is legit.
Unfortunately there are people out there who take advantage of writers.
They'll take the work and use it without ever crediting the writer.
Which means you won't get paid.
This small upfront fee just makes sure the client is putting skin in the game.
From here, you can generate results and still accept commission.
And if you generate results, the client will likely have more work for you in the future.
It's a win-win for everyone.
Have a great week,
