Friend,
A mistake a lot of new writers make is overfocusing on techniques.
In the process they miss an important factor: readability.
It doesn't matter how good your copy is if nobody wants to read it.
Here are 3 easy ways you can make sure your customer is reading what you write.
Keep Sentences Short
The average human attention span is around 6 seconds (and decreasing).
Nobodies going to read through long sentences to buy something.
Split your sentences up & get rid of filler words.
In most cases, the less words you use, the better.
Use Line Breaks
As a copywriter I often spend my time writing landing pages.
The biggest issue with copy that my clients send over? It's always full of paragraphs.
These are a great way to turn away customers.
They visit your site, see a big block and leave.
Break your writing into readable chunks.
Combine this with tip 1 for double the impact.
Avoid Overusing Words
There's nothing more frustrating than overusing words in your copy.
Here's something I saw recently:
"Our bespoke computer software combines bespoke technology with innovative, forward driven thinking. This helps us deliver bespoke solutions when you need them most."
That's a lot of words that don't really mean anything.
Also by its 3rd use, the word 'bespoke' just becomes annoying.
Make sure you avoid repeating words too many times in your writing.
You want to reinforce a vision, but there are better ways of doing so.
Read Out Loud
The best way to check all of these is to read your copy out loud.
When reading out loud you'll quickly recognise any problems in your writing.
These tips may seem simple, yet the mistakes are still made by most writers.
Make sure you cut them out early.
