During this training, we will provide an overview of HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 with a focus on how these federal privacy laws apply to data sharing in NJ. Topics will include audits, incident reporting, emergencies, and coordination of care.


This training will be presented by Meghan Mead, JD (CoE-PHI).

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe basic legal requirements of 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA regulations

  • Explain how the two sets of regulations are interconnected and differences between the requirements of each set of the regulations

  • Describe recent changes to 42 CFR Part 2

  • Explain how federal health privacy laws apply to data sharing in NJ

  • Identify scenarios to assist in applying the legal principles discussed in the presentation through case study examples and allow for participants in the program to engage in real time application with instant feedback through polling

  • Describe how to access resources and technical assistance provided by the CoE-PHI for practitioners and state agencies after the program
