A Journey Through the Graveyard of Dead Computer Languages

Software development is a fast-paced world where new programming languages are born, thrive, and sometimes, fade into obscurity. Much like the "Day of the Dead," where we honor those who have passed, it's time to pay homage to the "dead" computer languages. They may no longer be in active use, but their contributions to the field of software development remain significant.

Revolutionizing Legacy Applications with a Microservices Frontend: Advantages and Challenges

The move from a monolithic system to a microservices architecure brings powerful benefits, including flexibility, scalability, and resilience, to name just a few. The key is to address the gotchas early to pave the way to a successful transition.

When developing a microservice frontend, these are among the challenges you'll face: managing dependencies, reconciling inconsistent data models, and overcoming limited documentation in legacy systems.

With careful planning, the modernization process through microservices not only improves application performance and maintainability but also ensures its readiness for future technological evolvement.

Paying down tech debt: further learnings

Our previous newsletter shared our thoughts on addressing challenges with accumulated technical debt. We've put much time and effort into unraveling the mystery and assembling an optimal set of best practices over the years. Our effort is ongoing, and we recently came across this thoughtful article by industry veteran Lou Franco writing in the Pragmatic Engineer—the article layers in a further round of thoughts on paying down technical debt worth sharing.

The Problem With Microservices

There's great substance to thesis that microservices are a big win for corporate IT. But like any promising and developing technology, it's worth a deep-dive into the unique issues that arise when implementation time comes around, to avoid the avoidable.

Dave Farley at the Continuous Delivery YouTube channel provides his honest take on the real costs and benefits of microservices and the hidden complexities lurking just beneath the surface of this promising architecture.

This software company says ditching the cloud was worth $10 million in savings — and there's still more to come

We're big fans of diving into the numbers when the fate of projects, goals, or technology is at stake. After all, you are what you measure. In the case of cloud technology, we are particularly interested in ROI as the number tends to wander into a gray area when everything is accounted for. So when experts are in a position to talk about the numbers, we listen to them, as in the case of 37 Signals.

Switching from cloud services to proprietary hardware has saved 37 Signals $2 million annually, with savings still increasing, according to the company's CTO. David Heinemeier Hansson reported that the company reduced its cloud expenses from $3.2 million per year to just $1.
