I had dinner with an old friend the other night, and to be honest I was a little nervous.

This guy was incredibly bright, personable, and motivated all throughout school, and he’d landed a great job that his parents probably mentioned to everyone whenever they got the chance.

So when we sat down I was a little nervous to tell him I was a part of an affiliate program. I’m proud of what I’m doing and am beyond satisfied with what I’m earning, but I figured this guy’s life would blow mine out of the water.

But then something funny happened.

He asked me how my job was, and I said I was happy and doing well but quickly asked him the same question thanks to my nerves. Instead of answering, he paused and took a sip of his drink. Then he simply told me he felt like he was stuck in quicksand.

He loved the work he was doing, but knew that salaries in his industries only went so high. I was surprised to learn he was earning 37k a year and thought it would be incredible if he reached 40k soon. Earning anything above that seemed like a dream to him. He loved what he did, but the salary ceiling was always going to be low and he was running out of time to make a career change. Then I did something I never thought I would.
