| Dear Friends of City Youth Now,
First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who participated in our Rise Awards Ceremony on June 1, 2018 at the Bently Reserve. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, donors, and attendees, we exceeded our fundraising goal. This generous outcome allows us to allocate even more funds for programming which serves San Francisco’s most vulnerable youth populations.
All of this, of course, would not have been possible without the dedication of our event team including board members, event committee, staff, and many generous volunteers. Whether finding silent auction items, creating a slideshow presentation, or even lifting heavy tables at the end of the night, you all contributed to the success of this event! To me, it's the true meaning of community. We are beginning to plan our 2019 awards ceremony with the goal of increasing our income so that more resources go into supporting youth in need.
In the meantime, our staff has been busy as ever providing back-to-school clothing and supplies to our youth. Many of our paid teen interns on probation are wrapping up their summer internships and are being connected to other employment opportunities. We are also gearing up to receive more college interns from San Francisco State to help us create new lesson plans for our professional development curriculum.
I hope you enjoy catching up on our recent events through this newsletter and again, thank you for partnering with us to make a positive impact on the lives of San Francisco’s youth.
Sincerely, Didier Perez Board President City Youth Now |

|
| | | Central to our program was our Scholarship Awards Ceremony recognizing youth who have risen above their obstacles as wards of San Francisco's court system to pursue higher education. This fall our scholarship recipients will be attending:

Youth Partnering for Education and Employment (YPEE) Program |
|
| College Tours This past month, City Youth Now partnered with the Juvenile Probation Department to take youth on probation on summer college tours! The youth toured both City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University and learned about the application process, financial aid, and academic programs. The day was filled with pop quizzes and fun prizes. All the youth left feeling more confident in the college admissions process and picturing college in their near future. |
| School Supply Giveaway As the new school year approaches, youth in San Francisco's foster care and juvenile justice systems struggle to obtain the necessary supplies for school. Through City Youth Now's school supply giveaway, we've equipped over 150 children and teens with the materials necessary to begin a successful school year! |

Summer Camps Summer is a time for fun, friends, and relaxation. It is also a time when many low-income youth lose some of the achievement gains they made in the previous school year. This is why every summer, City Youth Now helps youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems gain access to summer camps, which equip youth with new skills and keep them engaged in educational and enriching activities. This year, youth attended soccer, animal, and theater camps, and various camps at local community centers. |

Inside the Juvenile Justice Center |
|
| David Noble This summer, City Youth Now continued our decades-long partnership with Bread & Roses to invite David Noble to perform for the youth housed at the Juvenile Justice Center. For David, this was a homecoming of sorts, as he has previously served as a social worker at the Youth Guidance Center. David has a background in music therapy and did a great job connecting with the youth through his music. It was wonderful to see the youth challenging themselves by joining him on stage to perform their raps. |

What tasks have you helped with at CYN? I helped with fundraising, data collection, Rise Awards planning, and tutoring in the Juvenile Hall.
What is your most memorable moment at CYN? The City Youth Now staff threw a small party for all the volunteers. I really enjoyed spending time with everyone and hearing about all the other volunteer experiences. The Rise Awards was also very memorable. It felt so great to watch the event unfold, especially after all the hard work we put into planning it. In addition, it was really powerful to see all the scholarship recipients receive their scholarships.
What is on your bucket list? I really want to visit Colombia one day. I would also like to give a TED Talk on the school-to-prison pipeline.
What has been your biggest cooking disaster When I was little I tried to make cookies by putting flour, jelly, and water in a bowl. To cook these cookies I put them out in the sun to bake.

What tasks have you helped with at CYN? I have taken on tasks relating to CYN’s social media accounts, but I have also delved into graphic design work. What is your most memorable moment at CYN? My favorite moments at CYN have included overhearing the kids come into the office excited to hear about their internships and seeing how the work done here actually affects children in a positive manner.
What is your favorite holiday, and why? My favorite holiday is Christmas because it’s a moment where everyone, no matter what religious affiliation, feels the joy and energy that is coupled up around this time of year.
What is on your bucket list? I would love to travel to South Africa.
What has been your biggest cooking disaster?
Although I realize there isn’t much “cooking” involved in this situation, several times I have forgotten when I had a pizza in the oven…
