CAPTIONED SHOWTIMES — WEDNESDAY JULY 12

Welcome to Wakaliwood. ONCE UPON A TIME IN UGANDA is a documentary delving into maverick Ugandan filmmaker Isaac Nabwan and his of over-the-top, no-budget action movies. Dubbed Africa’s Tarantino, Isaac has produced 40+ films, including WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ALEX and BAD BLACK. His inspiration is equal parts 1980s American action movies and Shaw Brothers martial arts films, with a Ugandan twist. His films’ budgets are in the range of $200, and his homegrown studio employs neighbors and friends working on as many as five productions at once.

50th Anniversary Re-Issue

Documentarian D.A. Pennebaker focuses his lens on a 1973 concert by David Bowie, who performs under the moniker Ziggy Stardust with his glam-rock backing band, the Spiders From Mars. While some backstage footage of the theatrical singer-songwriter is featured, the majority of the film is devoted to the music played onstage, which includes hits, album cuts and covers of Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground songs. Bowie also shocks fans by announcing his intention to drop the Stardust persona.

“The result miraculously resurrects a seminal moment in rock history, elevating Ziggy Stardust into the landmark cultural event it always should have been.” — AV Club

"Pennebaker's Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars captures Bowie at perhaps his purest, punkiest rock 'n' roll peak."

— Toronto Star

Director: D.A. Pennebaker (MONTEREY POP,

THE MIRACLE CLUB

OPENS JULY 14!

Ballygar, Ireland, in the year 1968: a boisterous hard-knocks community in outer Dublin that marches to its own beat – frenzied, fast and loose – and yet also deeply soulful; rooted in traditions of loyalty, faith & togetherness. And the opportunity to rise above one's daily struggles is frankly a pipe dream, especially for women. There's just one dream for the women of Ballygar to taste freedom and escape the gauntlet of domestic life: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes.

“This cozy charmer sneaks into the summer box office race as a perfect antidote to all the blazing big budget extravaganzas."
