Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema 🎥 Updates for October 21, 2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

In case you haven't heard, the good news we've been waiting for has arrived. We’re very excited that Governor Cuomo has finally released a set of restrictions for cinemas to re-open in NY State. We are reviewing them and developing plans to meet or exceed the protocols for safe movie-going.

We will definitely NOT be opening the cinema on October 23rd. Installation of new, mandatory HVAC filtration systems is dependent on available supply, which is currently under very high demand. For us in Tompkins County, there’s also the concern that several adjacent counties are on the cinema “no-fly” list because of a positivity rate at or above 2% on a 14-day rolling average. We will continue to monitor these data very closely to ensure that we limit any risk to our safe bubble here in Ithaca.

More details will be coming soon, as we assess the supply chain for proper safety equipment and provide ample time to train our staff on new safety protocols We hope to be back open before Thanksgiving!

In the meantime, our fantastic (and Fantastik) virtual offerings continue with three new openers this weekend.

And TONIGHT, be sure to join us for a very special VIRTUAL FILMMAKER Q & A. At 6 PM tonight, we're hosting a panel with the creative team behind Echoes of the Empire: Beyond Genghis Khan.
Pre-register NOW for this special Zoom Q & A!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

COMING HOME AGAIN

Coming Home Again

“Gently explores the shared language of love between mother and son."

Based on a personal essay by Chang-rae Lee that was published in The New Yorker, Coming Home Again is an intimate family drama about a mother, a son, and the burden of family expectations.

Chang-rae, a first generation Korean-American, has returned to his family home in San Francisco to care for his ailing mother. Wanting nothing more than to fulfill his role as the supportive son, Chang-rae must come to terms with his own conflicted emotions towards his mother.

Directors: Wayne Wang
Writers: Chang-Rae Lee
Stars: Justin Chon, Jackie Chung, Christina July Kim

RADIUM GIRLS

Radium GIrls

“Radium Girls takes place during the Jazz Age but it holds powerful, far-reaching relevance for today."

Based on true events, Radium Girls follows teen sisters, Bessie and Jo Cavallo, who dream of Hollywood and Egyptian pyramids as they paint luminous watch dials at the American Radium factory in New Jersey. When Jo loses a tooth, Bessie’s world is turned upside down as a mystery slowly unravels.

She discovers a corporate cover-up and, in a radical coming of age story, Bessie and the Radium Girls decide to take on American Radium. Based on historical events, the national sensation following the notorious case of the Radium Girls in 1928 ultimately led to significant and lasting impact in the area of workplace health and safety and the study of radioactivity.

Directors: Lydia Dean Pilcher, Ginny Mohler
Writers: Ginny Mohler, Brittany Shaw
Stars: Joey King, Abby Quinn, Cara Seymour

SPOOKIES

Spookies

“A surreal blitz of ooze, slime, hoboes, failed birthday parties, Grim Reapers, explosions, zombies, people jumping through walls, and a guy with his own face silkscreened on his shirt."

-Joseph A. Ziemba, BLEEDING SKULL

After taking shelter in a spooky old mansion, a group of travelers discover a ouija board and decide to spend the night. But they soon learn that playing with the forces of black magic isn’t fun and games, and it’s not long before they’re battling demonic creatures, shape shifters, and other forms of evil! Of all of the bizarre horror films made in the 1980s, SPOOKIES easily ranks among the weirdest.

The movie theater operators of America are desperate for help from Congress. Without such help, 70% of the theaters in the country could file for bankruptcy or close permanently by the end of the year. More than 70,000 jobs could be lost permanently.

Senators Schumer, Cardin and Shaheen have included relief for movie theaters as part of the Save Our Stages initiative, and SOS is now included in their COVID relief bill. We seek a bipartisan solution for pandemic relief now that would include these provisions to preserve moviegoing in America.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING
ADVOCATE FOR A BIPARTISAN SOLUTION THAT SUPPORTS THE EXPANDED SAVE OUR STAGES ACT:

  • Support an expanded SOS Act that provides grants to performance venues, live theater, and movie theaters, calculated at up to 45% of gross 2019 revenues or $12 million per company, whichever is less. Also allows a supplemental grant for businesses that have lost over 80% in revenue.

  • Movie theaters and live venues are among the hardest-hit industries that will be the slowest to recover from the pandemic.

  • SOS is the only proposal that offers the right amount of FLEXIBLE funding that will be the bridge that keeps the theaters from going dark forever. Across the country this legislation would save over 3,500 theaters.
