This week, we add two remarkable documentaries to the mix, each with their own reminders about the power of democracy and compassion to change the world for the better.

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

CITY HALL

City Hall

CRITIC'S PICK

“MAGISTERIAL! Fundamentally a portrait of a people. "City Hall" is also an exploration of civil society and the common good."

City government touches almost every aspect of our lives. Most of us are unaware of or take for granted these necessary services such as police, fire, sanitation, veterans affairs, elder support, parks, licensing of various professional activities, recordkeeping of birth, marriage and death as well as hundreds of other activities that support Boston residents and visitors.

CITY HALL, by Frederick Wiseman, shows the efforts by Boston city government to provide these services. The film also illustrates the variety of ways the city administration enters into civil discourse with the citizens of Boston. Mayor Walsh and his administration are presented addressing a number of their policy priorities which include racial justice, affordable housing, climate action, and homelessness. CITY HALL shows a city government successfully offering a wide variety of services to a diverse population.

THE MAN WHO MENDS WOMEN

The Man Who Mends Women

“Thierry Michel signs a work as shattering as it is fascinating."

-Metro

A portrait of the impressive life and work of internationally renowned gynecologist Doctor Denis Mukwege from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He received the prestigious 2014 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for his struggle against sexual violence. Mukwege medically assisted over 46,000 sexually abused women in sixteen years of professional practice.

Sexual violence against women has been used as a weapon of war for years in the violence-ridden and poverty-stricken Democratic Republic of Congo. In order to provide medical, psychological and emotional aid to the victims, Dr. Mukwege founded the Panzi hospital in Bukavu in 1999. Besides his work as a physician Dr. Mukwege also defends human rights and seeks to raise global awareness on the issue of sexual violence in his country. He condemns the political reluctance to tackle the problem and is not afraid to hit the nail on the head.

We're approaching the all-important "lame duck" session of Congress, when another COVID relief package is sure to be on the docket. The movie theater operators of America are desperate for help from Congress. Without such help, 70% of the theaters in the country could file for bankruptcy or close permanently by the end of the year. More than 70,000 jobs could be lost permanently.

Senators Schumer, Cardin and Shaheen have included relief for movie theaters as part of the Save Our Stages initiative, and SOS is now included in their COVID relief bill. We seek a bipartisan solution for pandemic relief now that would include these provisions to preserve moviegoing in America.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING
ADVOCATE FOR A BIPARTISAN SOLUTION THAT SUPPORTS THE EXPANDED SAVE OUR STAGES ACT:

  • Support an expanded SOS Act that provides grants to performance venues, live theater, and movie theaters, calculated at up to 45% of gross 2019 revenues or $12 million per company, whichever is less. Also allows a supplemental grant for businesses that have lost over 80% in revenue.

  • Movie theaters and live venues are among the hardest-hit industries that will be the slowest to recover from the pandemic.

  • SOS is the only proposal that offers the right amount of FLEXIBLE funding that will be the bridge that keeps the theaters from going dark forever. Across the country this legislation would save over 3,500 theaters.
