Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

We've all earned a break from Election Day coverage, and our virtual cinema offerings will be adding several new distractions on Friday.

But first, be sure to join us for a very special VIRTUAL TALKBACK  being organized by the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival. On Thursday, November 12 at 6 pm, FLEFF co-directors, Dr. Patricia Zimmerman and Dr. Thomas Shevory, will be joined by Dr. Sueyoung Park-Primiano, Assistant Professor of English and Film Studies at Kennesaw State University, and Walter Byongsok Chon, Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy and Theatre Studies in the Theatre Arts Department at Ithaca College, for an open discussion forum on Wayne Wang's Coming Home Again.

Pre-register NOW for this special Zoom event!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

NEWLY RESTORED!

“Only watch this if you love car chases, car jumps, car explosions, car smashes, and burning men."

Turns out a Texas stuntman-turned-filmmaker unleashed the most explosive, death-defying, bullet-riddled, grenade-launching, flame-broiled, anti-human megattack in independent film history back in 1989, and no one knew … UNTIL NOW.

Two FBI agents protect the fleeing girlfriend of a jewel thief slain by gangsters in a 4K restoration of the 1989 cult classic by director John Stewart.

Director: John Stewart
Writers: David Reskin
Stars: Gregory Scott Cummins, William Hubbard Knight, Barri Murphy

DIVINE LOVE

Divine Love

“A lush, intricate sociopolitical commentary."

It’s the year 2027 in this dystopian, fluorescent Sci Fi story of Joana (Brazilian star Dira Paes), who uses her bureaucratic job to convince divorcing couples to stay together. Her secret weapon is Divine Love, an evangelical cult she belongs to that mixes in a little swinging and group fun into its more traditional prayers and services. Joana herself can’t seem to get pregnant by her own husband, but in an attempt to save her own marriage, she prays regularly at a very unusual religious drive-in, looking for a miracle to help her conceive.

Divine Love is an amped up, sexy and witty take on a future full of dance parties, ritualistic orgies, cults and fundamentalist Christianity, and a critique of today’s right-wing led Brazil.

Director: Gabriel Mascaro
Writers: Gabriel Mascaro, Rachel Daisy Ellis
Stars: Dira Paes, Julio Machado, Antonio Pastich

THE DONUT KING

The Donut King

“More than just a movie about doughnuts… or about a self-made man who earned a fortune making them, The Donut King serves up a weighty musing on a variety of facets of the immigrant experience."

Ted’s story is one of fate, love, survival, hard knocks, and redemption. It’s the rags to riches story of a refugee escaping Cambodia, arriving in America in 1975 and building an unlikely multi-million-dollar empire baking America’s favorite pastry, the donut. Ted sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming refugees and helped them get on their feet teaching them the ways of the donut business.

By 1979 he was living the American Dream. But, in life, great rise can come with great falls.

Director: Alice Gu
Writers: Alice Gu, Carol Martori
Stars: Chuong Pek Lee, Susan Lim, Ted Ngoy

Coming Home Again

We're approaching the all-important "lame duck" session of Congress, when another COVID relief package is sure to be on the docket. The movie theater operators of America are desperate for help from Congress. Without such help, 70% of the theaters in the country could file for bankruptcy or close permanently by the end of the year. More than 70,000 jobs could be lost permanently.

Senators Schumer, Cardin and Shaheen have included relief for movie theaters as part of the Save Our Stages initiative, and SOS is now included in their COVID relief bill. We seek a bipartisan solution for pandemic relief now that would include these provisions to preserve moviegoing in America.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING
ADVOCATE FOR A BIPARTISAN SOLUTION THAT SUPPORTS THE EXPANDED SAVE OUR STAGES ACT:

  • Support an expanded SOS Act that provides grants to performance venues, live theater, and movie theaters, calculated at up to 45% of gross 2019 revenues or $12 million per company, whichever is less. Also allows a supplemental grant for businesses that have lost over 80% in revenue.

  • Movie theaters and live venues are among the hardest-hit industries that will be the slowest to recover from the pandemic.

  • SOS is the only proposal that offers the right amount of FLEXIBLE funding that will be the bridge that keeps the theaters from going dark forever. Across the country this legislation would save over 3,500 theaters.
