Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema 🎥 Updates for June 3, 2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

We start this week's update with an important FREE virtual cinema offering in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival.

In response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police Officers, documentarian and Ithaca College Faculty member Idrissou Mora-Kpai has made his film America Street available for free screenings now through June 9th. Filmed in Charleston, South Carolina in the wake of the killing of Walter Scott, it offers a timely and deeply personal profile of living and making a living while Black in 21st Century America.

The art of film provides a unique space where we can grapple with and illuminate contemporary issues. As our nation continues to come to terms with its long history of racial violence and inequities, we encourage all Cinemapolitans to watch, read, and listen to black voices; act in support of anti-racist causes; and donate to organizations that are providing services and aid to movements of social protest for racial justice. Links to some recommended viewing are included below.

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

From Director Idrissou Mora-Kpai:

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of the police, we are once again witnessing the courageous action of Black people and their allies protesting the systemic violence against Black bodies. In solidarity with this latest movement of social protest for racial justice, I am providing free access to my recent film, “America Street,” which I shot five years ago in Charleston in the wake of the Walter Scott killing. Too many times, too many similarities. We need to stop this racist pandemic of anti-black violence that started over 400 years ago.

In downtown Charleston, South Carolina, black owned convenient stores like Joe’s have almost disappeared. Joe is fighting to keep his but he knows that its survival depends on the survival of his local community.
