Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema 🎥 Updates for July 29, 2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

Another summer weekend is ahead with FOUR new virtual cinema titles to enjoy. This Friday brings a set of remarkable documentaries covering a variety of heroes - from first responders to cultural icons.

Before that, though, please join us for a very special VIRTUAL TALKBACK that's part of this year's VIRTUAL Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival. On Thursday, July 30 at 6 pm, FLEFF co-directors, Dr. Patricia Zimmerman and Dr. Thomas Shevory, will be joined by Dr. Leah Shafer (Media and Society, Hobart and William Smith Colleges) and Dr. Zhang Zhen (Cinema Studies and Director, Asian Film and Media Initiative, New York University) for an open discussion of the compelling new documentary, Ai Weiwei: Yours TrulyPre-register now for this special Zoom discussion!

As we continue to wait for word from state and local officials regarding re-opening the cinema, we're hard at work making changes to the space. Work will begin soon to convert our bathrooms with fully touch-free fixtures. DONATE today to help us make these important upgrades!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

VIRTUAL CINEMA
THE FIGHT

The Fight

“Inspiring and informative. Frankly, it’s nice to see David beating Goliath on the big screen.”

At this defining moment in American history, THE FIGHT follows a scrappy team of heroic ACLU lawyers in an electrifying battle over abortion rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights and voting rights. From the directors of WEINER, and winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking at this year’s Sundance.

Directors: Eli B. Despres, Josh Kriegman

Includes exclusive post-film discussion between producer Kerry Washington and the ACLU lawyers featured in the film.

HELMUT NEWTON:
THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

Helmut Newton

“An engaging and surprisingly playful documentary about the man who was arguably the most transgressive photographer to emerge from the 1960s and '70s...”

One of the great masters of photography, Helmut Newton made a name for himself exploring the female form, and his cult status continues long after his tragic death in a Los Angeles car crash in 2004. Newton’s unique and striking way of depicting women has always posed the question: did he empower his subjects or treat them as sexual objects?

Through candid interviews with Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling, Isabella Rossellini, Anna Wintour, Claudia Schiffer, Marianne Faithfull, Hanna Schygulla, Nadja Auermann, and Newton’s wife June (a.k.a. photographer Alice Springs), this documentary captures his legacy and seeks to answer questions about the themes at the core of his life’s work – creating provocative and subversive images of women.

Director: Gero von Boehm
Stars: Charlotte Rampling, Isabella Rossellini, Catherine Deneuve

VIRTUAL CINEMA
MARLEY

Marley

the film is documentary prose, not poetry...treating Marley as a man of depth and nuance, of inner light and shadow."

Born into poverty in rural Jamaica, Bob Marley became a prophet for the world’s oppressed, preaching peace, love, and understanding with a universal language – song. The Marley family has rolled out a yearlong MARLEY75 commemorative series of events in celebration of the legendary cultural icon, on what would have been Marley’s seventy-fifth birthday.

In this re-release of MARLEY, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin MacDonald combines unheard tracks, unseen footage, and intimate interviews to paint a definitive portrait of the legendary artist.

Director: Kevin MacDonald
Stars: Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, Rita Marley

VIRTUAL CINEMA
REBUILDING PARADISE

Rebuilding Paradise

A sincere and skillfully assembled tribute to a community’s fortitude.”

On the morning of Nov. 8, 2018, a devastating firestorm engulfed the picturesque city of Paradise, California. By the time the Camp Fire was extinguished, it had killed 85 people, displaced 50,000 residents and destroyed 95% of local structures. It was the deadliest U.S. fire in 100 years — and the worst ever in California’s history.

Rebuilding Paradise is a moving story of resilience in the face of tragedy, as a community ravaged by disaster comes together to recover what was lost and begin the important task of rebuilding.

Director: Ron Howard

#SaveYourCinema

As our members and supporters, we want to let you know about the urgent state of movie theaters as we go through these uncertain times.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put movie theaters like ours at risk of going dark for good. From small independent art houses like Cinemapolis to nationwide exhibitors, movie theaters employ over 150,000 people and have formed a cornerstone of the American experience for generations. Without swift action from Congress, our theaters could close forever—depriving audiences of the magic of movies for years to come.

SaveYourCinema.com

Together, we can urge Congress to keep movie theaters alive until they can fully reopen. Visit saveyourcinema.com to tell your legislators that you demand action to save local movie theaters now.

Help spread the word on social media with the hashtag #SaveYourCinema.
