As we head into another summer weekend, we're offering 2 wildly different films to join our virtual cinema titles. The Sundance hit We Are Little Zombies is a frenetic Japanese confection that defies categorization, and Creating a Character shines the spotlight on the unheralded legacy of Moni Yakim, one of the greatest acting instructors of our time.

AI WEIWEI: YOURS TRULY

Human rights become profoundly personal when Ai Weiwei, China’s most famous artist, transforms Alcatraz Island prison into an astonishing expression of socially-engaged art focused on the plight of the unjustly incarcerated. At the core of the installation, called @Large, were portraits of prisoners of conscience coupled with the opportunity to write letters of solidarity to the imprisoned.

In her impassioned and powerful film, director Cheryl Haines captures this monumental exhibition from conception to fruition, and as well visits current and former prisoners, including American whistleblower Chelsea Manning, to learn how these letters were vital to their survival.

The art of film provides a unique space where we can grapple with and illuminate contemporary issues. As our nation continues to come to terms with its long history of racial violence and inequities, we encourage all Cinemapolitans to watch, read, and listen to black voices; act in support of anti-racist causes; and donate to organizations that are providing services and aid to movements of social protest for racial justice.

Documentarian Xavier Burgin offers a compelling look at the evolution of a genre in Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. You can stream it on Shudder (7 day free trial available).
Writer/producer Prentice Penny made his feature directing debut with Uncorked, an acclaimed family drama about a young Black man seeking to become a master sommelier. Courtney B. Vance turns in a winning performance as a disapproving dad in this film that's now streaming on Netflix.
Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) has made film history as the first Black woman to direct a comic book movie. The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as the leader of a covert team of immortal mercenaries. KiKi Layne and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star in this fantasy/action/thriller, now available on Netflix.
