Cinemapolis - Ithaca's Member Supported Independent Movie Theater

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

The dog days of summer are officially here. We'd LOVE to be giving you shelter in the air-conditioned comfort of your favorite member-supported arthouse cinema right now, but alas, you'll just have to hunker down at home with some virtual cinema movies until we can get the doors back open for you.

This week, we're VERY excited to offer our very first virtual offering as part of the Family Classics Picture Show, our annual series of kid-friendly movies at family friendly prices.

H is for Happiness is sure to be a NEW Family Classic, and starting on Friday, with a simple click, you can bring it right into your living room - or even project it in your backyard for some outdoor summertime fun! The Family Classics Picture Show is made possible by lead sponsor, the Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley with additional support from Mama Goose.

JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY

The 1959 classic is considered one of the most extraordinary and possibly the first concert film ever made. The film was named to the National Film Registry in 1999, and its 4K restoration by IndieCollect was funded by the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress in time to celebrate the film’s 60th Anniversary.

Filmed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island and directed by world-renowned photographer, Bert Stern. JAZZ ON A SUMMER’S DAY features intimate performances by an all-star line-up of musical legends including Louis Armstrong, Thelonius Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, and closes with a beautiful rendition or The Lord’s Prayer by Mahalia Jackson at midnight to usher in Sunday morning.

MARTIN MARGIELA: IN HIS OWN WORDS

One of the most revolutionary and influential fashion designers of his time, Martin Margiela has remained an elusive figure the entirety of his decades-long career. From Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant to creative director at Hermès to leading his own House, Margiela never showed his face publicly and avoided interviews, but reinvented fashion with his radical style through forty-one provocative collections.

Now, for the first time, the “Banksy of fashion” reveals his drawings, notes, and personal items in this exclusive, intimate profile of his vision. The film features interviews with, among others, Margiela himself, Jean Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld, trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, fashion critic Cathy Horyn, and fashion historian Olivier Saillard. The score has been composed by the Belgian rock band dEUS.

Our friends at Ithaca Fantastik are taking their show on the road this weekend with a special program in collaboration with The Drive-In Ithaca.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the water...it's Joe Dante's 1978 drive-in classic, Piranha!

It's easy to support our local genre film fest - just grab a carload of COVID bubble buddies and head to City Harbor on Friday, August 14 for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this campy grindhouse screamfest back on the big screen.
