Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema & Home 🎥 Viewing Options - 4/8/2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

Don't worry - you won't have don a headset or beam yourself into cyberspace, but starting this Friday, April 10th, Cinemapolis IS going virtual!

In response to the statewide “stay at home” order, we are offering a weekly slate of new films for patrons to view at home. We're collaborating with independent film distributors like Film Movement, Kino Lorber, Magnolia Pictures, and Oscilloscope Laboratories to sell patrons “virtual tickets” for online rentals of current first-run releases.

Prices will vary slightly depending on the studio, but in all cases, a portion of the proceeds come back to support operations at Cinemapolis while the theater is closed.

All virtual cinema titles available to rent can be screened online using a laptop or mobile device. Other options such as Roku, ChromeCast or Apple TV may be available depending on the platforms being used by each studio. Detailed instructions will be available at the time of purchase.

Just like our regularly scheduled film screenings, titles will only be available for a limited duration, and new titles will be added each Friday. The first week of new, virtual releases features four films: Bacurau, Corpus Christi, Once Were Brothers, and Saint Frances.

VIRTUAL CINEMA STARTING 4/10

Bacurau

Corpus Christi

Once Were Brothers

Saint Frances

We moved quickly and thoughtfully to launch these virtual cinema offerings, but they're new. Please be patient if there are some initial technical issues - know that we'll respond promptly.

Virtual Cinema goes live on FRIDAY, APRIL 10th.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
BACURAU

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

"At once both more forceful and more inscrutable than Filho’s previous work, Bacurau plunges deeper into midnight territory as its core ideas take hold, its ghosts become literal, and its heroes take up arms."

The first of several virtual titles that were scheduled to be part of this year's Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, Bacurau is both powerfully political and unapologetically psychedelic. This darkly comic Brazilian thriller defies genre and was a jury prize winner at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
CORPUS CHRISTI

"Often moving but also disquieting and even intermittently funny, this drama unfurls a spiritual parable that is uniquely Polish but accessible to all."

Cinemapolitans had only two days to see this Academy Award nominee in the theater prior to our closing, so Film Movement has made Corpus Christi available for our first set of virtual screening options. Don't miss it!

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
ONCE WERE BROTHERS

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

"Robertson [is] an articulate and ingratiating tour guide through all this glorious and eventually tortured history."

Another title that was on our screens just before the closure, Once Were Brothers is based on Robbie Robertson's memoir Testimony and chronicles the life and times of The Band. Get a virtual ticket for this one, and then click over to Amazon Prime for a double feature with The Last Waltz.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:

SAINT FRANCES

"It's truly refreshing to watch a film where nobody has anything figured out, where life proceeds messily and imperfectly. Saint Frances is unpredictable in a very human way."

Winner of the Audience Award at last year's SXSW Festival, Saint Frances follows failing nanny Bridget (star and screenwriter Kelly O'Sullivan) as she deals personal heartaches and professional headaches, all while forming a special bond with the titular six-year-old and her two moms.
