Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema & Home 🎥 Viewing Options - 4/29

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

Life in New York State is still "on pause," but you can hit PLAY on four new virtual cinema offerings coming from Cinemapolis straight to your home starting this Friday.

All these new movies arriving does mean that we need to make some room, however. If you haven't yet checked out And Then We Danced, Best of Cat Video Fest, Eating Up Easter, Extra Ordinary, Saint Frances, and The Whistlers- hop to it! All six are only available through the end of the day tomorrow, April 30th.

We're watching the advice of state and federal officials VERY closely to determine when it might be safe to welcome you all back to the cinema. In the meantime, these virtual cinematic options offer a small way to stay connected to our Cinemapolis family. Other exciting ways are in the works, so stay tuned!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

NEW VIRTUAL CINEMA TITLES

Cordillera Of Dreams
Deerskin
The Etruscan Smile
Slay the Dragon

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
THE CORDILLERA OF DREAMS

Cordillera of Dreams

“The Cordillera of Dreams is a beautiful film about nightmares that have yet to end.”

Presented in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, The Cordillera of Dreams is documentarian Patricio Guzmán's stark and beautiful memoir of the Chile he left behind. This timely and deeply personal film won the best documentary prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival and is a NY Times Critic's Pick.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:
DEERSKIN

Deerskin

"A loopy entertaining WTF lark.”

Academy Award winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) stars in the cheekily bizarre tale of consumer obsession, Deerskin. This latest from gonzo French auteur Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Wrong) follows Georges, an aimless divorcé whose fixation with the titular animal hide jacket sends him down the road to ruin. This weird treat was originally set to play IRL at the theater, but now, thanks to virtual cinema, you have a chance to check it out at home. Don't pass it up!

 VIRTUAL CINEMA:
THE ETRUSCAN SMILE

The Etruscan Smile

"Brian Cox rages robustly and arrestingly against the dying of the light...”

Fans of HBO's Succession will see a different side of Golden Globe winner Brian Cox in the touching new drama, The Etruscan Smile. A "coming-to-terms" story of an aging Scotsman, it follows Rory MacNeil as he crosses continents to mend fences and play out the final volleys in a decades-spanning family feud. Along the way, it presents opportunities for stellar performances from a supporting cast that includes Rosanna Arquette and Thora Birch.

VIRTUAL CINEMA:

A WHITE, WHITE DAY

Slay the Dragon

"A compelling and instructive look at the practice of gerrymandering...an infuriating watch on several levels, which is entirely the point of this call-to-action portrait."

As the 2020 Census and Election Day loom, the never-more-timely documentary Slay the Dragon reminds us that "it's possible to make changes if you're passionate." This hit from last year's Tribeca Film Festival takes on the issue of gerrymandering and the everyday people on a mission to stop it. After watching the film, head over to Participant Media's social action page to find out how you can be part of the change.

CONTINUING ON VIRTUAL CINEMA

The Booksellers
Other Music
A White, White Day
The Wild Goose Lake

OTHER STREAMING OPTIONS

This week's recommendations include three great docs, all on Netflix:

  • The folks at Vox have put together an easily digestible, remarkably well researched doc on our current state of affairs: Coronavirus, Explained is a must-watch.

  • In Circus of Books, documentarian Rachel Mason tells the unexpected life story of her parents - the nice Jewish couple who happened to own LA's most successful gay porn store.

  • Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary, American Factory is a remarkable East-Meets-West look at manufacturing and globalization in the 21st Century.

COMING SOON TO VIRTUAL CINEMA

Dying for Gold
The Infiltrators
Slay the Dragon

As we finish up week 7 of closure, a special thanks to all the very generous Cinemapolitans who have made a donation, renewed or purchased a new membership, or planned for the future by ordering a gift card in the last two months. These important contributions provided much needed support and a humbling vote of confidence in all our efforts to keep the cinema going.

Hope to see you at the movies again soon!

Brett Bossard, Executive Director
