Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Updates & Home 🎥 Viewing Options - 3/26/2020

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

As you know, we voluntarily closed the theater on Sunday, March 15. At that time, we set a tentative re-open date of Friday, April 10, but conditions are changing daily, and we're prepared to stay closed until it is safe for our staff and this community to once again enjoy the cinematic experience together in the heart of downtown Ithaca.

In the meantime, our weekly updates will highlight past films from the Cinemapolis slate that are now available to view at home. We may have to self-isolate, but we needn't be isolated from great cinema!

This week's choices include a selection of STAFF PICKS from our loyal crew. Hope you enjoy them!

BRETT'S PICK:

KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS

Kirikou and the Sorceress

Recently postponed as part of our Family Classics Picture Show series, Kirikou and the Sorceress is a beautifully animated film drawn from elements of West African folk tales. It depicts how a newborn boy, Kirikou, saves his village from the evil witch Karaba.

Your family can stream it at home via Amazon Prime.

RACHEL'S PICK:

FRANCES HA

Frances Ha

In the age of Social Distancing, Frances Ha is who we should try to be. In Baumbach’s best film, Gerwig stars as the titular role and attempts to find herself in NYC after her best friend moves in with her boyfriend, causing Frances to find her own living situation. She grapples with feelings of isolation by not having a plan for her life.

Frances Ha played at Cinemapolis in June 2013. You can stream it at home on Netflix.

ANDY'S PICK:

HAGAZUSSA

Hagazussa

In a remote Alpine village in the 15th century lives a marked woman. The scapegoat of ancient superstitions and monstrous misogyny, this self-styled witch begins to assert her otherworldly birthright. This atmospheric debut feature from Lukas Feigelfeld is a haunting pagan death trip and a startling vision of psychedelic horror.

Hagazussa was an official selection in the 2017 Ithaca Fantastik Festival at Cinemapolis. You can stream it at home on Shudder.

ANDREW'S PICK:

MELANCHOLIA

Melancholia

Among Andrew's selections of "movies for the end of the world," Melancholia is an award-winning imagining of the apocalypse from Danish master Lars von Trier. Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgård star as the bride and groom at a wedding made more tense by the impending collision with another world.

Melancholia played at Cinemapolis in December 2011. You can stream it at home for free (with ads) on Vudu.

ANNA'S PICK:

MAGIC FOR BEGINNERS

Magic for Beginners

Anna's pick comes from her research on resources for viewing experimental films online:

"Jesse McLean shares (or concocts?) the most delightful stories that explore celebrity and illusion. I get more and more out of this film every time I see it. Seizure warning, there is a sequence of intense flashing about 2/3 in."

Magic for Beginners is available to stream for free on Vimeo.

BRETT'S PICK:

MOONLIGHT

Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Moonlight is Barry Jenkins' masterful 3-part portrait of Chiron, a young man grappling with his identity and sexuality in Miami.

Moonlight premiered at Cinemapolis in November 2016.

You can stream it at home on Netflix.

Hope to see you at the movies again soon!

Brett Bossard, Executive Director
