Many people in Ithaca, and folks around the world who work in academia and film, are mourning the loss of Dr. Patricia Zimmermann, who died this past Friday. Because Patty played such an important role in Cinemapolis for many years, I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of those who are grieving this loss and celebrating a remarkable life.
Patty was brilliant and accomplished in many ways, but what I most admired about her was what I would call her toughness — a term I am confident she’d appreciate. The scope of what she achieved as the Director of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival required a fierce determination. She executed a dizzying number of events, working with filmmakers and distributors from around the world and dozens of local collaborators. Throughout that process, challenges would inevitably arise. She relished a challenge. She inspired others to be undaunted and to share her belief in the power of film.
Patty also inspired through her kindness; she was quick and enthusiastic in celebrating the talents and successes of those around her.
To all of Patty’s loved ones, especially her husband Stewart Auyash and their son Sean, I send my deepest sympathies.
It’s difficult for me to believe that I met Patty less than a year ago. In a short time, she made an enormous impact on me, as she did on so many people. I will always be grateful that I had the opportunity to know her. |
