| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
September wraps up with a slew of special screenings and THREE great new films: - The turbulent life of chess master Bobby Fischer comes to the screen in Pawn Sacrifice. Helmed by Edward Zwick (Defiance), with a script by Steven Knight (Locke), the film centers on the 1972 Cold War battle of the minds between Brooklyn-born phenom Fischer (Tobey Maguire) and Russian champ Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). To get there, it takes us through Fischer's troubled youth and even more troubled adulthood, in what Movie Nation's Roger Moore calls "almost the first great movie of the fall," and a "gripping and entertaining history lesson."
- Director Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty (The Wind That Shakes the Barley) take us back to Ireland with Jimmy's Hall. Set in 1932, the Hall in the title is a controversial dance hall, reopened by Jimmy Gralton as he returns from a stint in the States, much to the chagrin of the town's Catholic leaders. Much like the film itself, the hall quickly becomes a place where art and politics collide, as Ireland's "Red Scare" comes to a head. The result is what Time Out London calls an "unusual story, vividly and intelligently told, and one that leaves you with a stirring sense of joy, injustice and hope."
- Also coming this Friday is a film that's been described as "superbly crafted," "enthrallingly intimate," and "scintillating stuff." Listen to Me Marlon uses the actor's own words—taken from thousands of hours of self-recorded audio tapes—to reveal the man behind the myth that has become "Brando." From his early days studying under Stella Adler all the way through his very-well publicized family tragedies, this fascinating Sundance documentary weaves a story of not just the great actor but of 20th century cinema itself. Don't miss this LIMITED ENGAGEMENT.
