Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Hard to believe it, but we're racing toward October already. And, as is often the case, as October approaches, things get weird. Two truly unique visions from two very different filmmakers open this Friday: - Just named runner-up for the People's Choice Award in the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness sidebar, Tusk is the latest genre-bending effort from Kevin Smith. Conceived almost on a dare during one of Smith's podcasts, this horror-comedy follows another loud-mouthed podcaster (Justin Long) to the Great White North as he undergoes a forced transformation from man to beast at the hands of a mad man (Michael Parks). Despite its goofy underpinnings, the film is gaining Smith acclaim he hasn't received since his early eruption onto the indie scene. According to Eric Kohn of IndieWire, "Tusk is a comedy about the process of eliciting shock and laughter from audiences by pushing both tones to their extremes. Only a director with the ability to play with those elements could have pulled them off."
- Many filmmakers have tried and failed to replicate the singular style of Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Tideland). With The Zero Theorem, he gives them more to aspire to. In a fantastically imagined future stitched together with technology both new and old, Academy Award winner Cristoph Waltz (Django Unchained) plays a hacker tasked with proving the titular theorem that "everything adds up to nothing." Time's Richard Corliss calls it "a spectacle that demands to be cherished — as long as the society Gilliam portrays is a satire, not a prophesy." Cherish it will you can...this is a LIMITED ENGAGEMENT!
