Greetings Cinemapolitans!

A week that includes a myriad of special events (including the continuation of the Cine con Cultura series and an event hosted by the Finger Lakes Women's Bar Association) is on the way, so pay close attention to the upcoming calendar of showtimes, which also happens to include TWO highly anticipated openers:
  • Ithaca favorite Lily Tomlin stars in Grandma, a rich character study of an acerbic poet whose granddaughter (We Are What We Are's Julia Garner) suddenly appears in need of crisis management. Written and directed by Paul Weitz (Being Flynn), the film is not only a perfect vehicle for Tomlin's talents, it's what Katie Walsh of IndieWire calls "a 'day in the life' film that manages to portray a whole life in one day."

  • Also coming on Friday is Meru - a striking and terrifying mountain climbing documentary summed up best by New York Magazine's David Edelstein: "Meru is a packed 90 minutes. And I guess it is inspiring, in the sense that if human beings can endure this kind of risk and punishment, they could colonize Mars or breed a super-race to carry our species to the ends of the galaxy. All the familiar critical adjectives (harrowing, etc.) sound especially lame in this context. The movie is sick."
The weekend also gets started with the latest installment of Fantastic Film Friday. Our friends from the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival have arranged for a special SNEAK PREVIEW screening of the Austrian chiller Goodnight Mommy (Ich Seh, Ich Seh). The film arrives for a weeklong run on October 2nd, but you can see it first at this SPECIAL SCREENING on Friday, September 18th at 9:30.
Then on Sunday, our Family Classics Picture Show series touches down with a 50s sci-fi masterpiece! The series re-introduces the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids with a year-long series of 10 fun and affordable Sunday matinees. The program continues on Sunday, September 20th at 2pm with a screening of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor Wells Fargo Advisors. Additional program support comes from Mama Goose.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see Diary of a Teenage Girl, End of the Tour, Mr. Holmes, and Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet soon. They all leave THIS Thursday (September 17).
 See you at the movies!
