| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Festival and Award Season approaches, as do a ton of new releases. We're squeezing three into our already great slate of movies this Friday: - Academy Award darlings Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley star in Learning To Drive, the latest heartfelt comedy from director Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me). Clarkson plays a recent divorcee seeking the help of Kingsley's Sikh driving instructor, who's struggling to put his own (recently arranged) marriage together. The intertwining stories of their lives–one in upscale Manhattan, the other in a tight-knit Sikh community in Queens–makes for what the Guardian calls "a great odd couple in this...dependable comedy."
- Also this weekend comes the vibrant new animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. This passion project, produced by Selma Hayek, takes eight of the most beloved segments of the famous Lebanese philosopher-poet's magnum opus and delegates each one to a different internationally renowned animator. Tied together with a beautiful family story directed by Roger Allers (The Lion King), the result delivers what Variety's Peter Debruge calls, simply, "a gift"–the cherished guide to life, death, love, and art in a package that can be appreciated by audiences both young and old.
- The third opener on Friday is the fascinating new documentary Best of Enemies. Co-directed by Robert Gordon and Academy Award winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), this look to the not-too-distant past of TV journalism recounts the famous 1968 on-screen debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, Jr. According to Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter, the film "convincingly argues that the Buckley-Vidal debates marked the beginning of the end of the gray days of "objective" TV news." See this LIMITED ENGAGEMENT while you can.

| Don't forget that our series of LIVE THEATRE on the BIG screen continues with a special presentation of Julie Taymor's acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Taymor, famous for redefining spectacle on Broadway, brings her stunning vision to Shakespeare's classic fantasy, captured live for the screen at the Theatre for a New Audience in 2014. Don't miss TWO opportunities to see what Newsday called "A deliriously beautiful, deeply magical staging." It screens on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, September 12 at 1:30 pm. |
| While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see Steve Jobs: Man in the Machine soon. It's limited engagement ends THIS Thursday (September 10). |
